The Amazing World of Puppetry

My Students

LCES is a K-5 magnet arts school that integrates the arts into everyday learning. We have a diverse population of students stemming from various economic and ethnic backgrounds. Our students work super hard and they are excited and eager to learn. About 50% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

My school mission is to explore the use of one or more of the arts in engaging and developing student problem solving, critical thinking, and 21st-century skills.

My Project

I am requesting a black light, amplifier and crushed black velvet. We will use amplified background music in my classroom, while puppets glow and animate in front of black velvet curtains. The amplifier will create a theatrical ambiance in my classroom for a full performance experience for all my students. This will give them a sense of how professional actors would feel while actively participating in class demonstrations and performances.

While the velvet curtains will be effective in creating a theatrical illusion of objects and puppets glow under the UV black lights.

This will guide my students to understand the science of why certain objects, especially made props and puppets that fluoresce with the use of UV black lights.
