My Students
Do you remember the first time a teacher put a book in your hands that changed your outlook on the world around you? My students have been unable to discover the wonders awaiting them in non-fiction, but they have not yet been introduced to valuable books in this reading genre.
I have the wonderful opportunity to be able to work in a small ranching and farming community in Montana.
I teach an amazing group of twenty-three second and third grade students. They are full of energy and are always ready to learn. As wonderful as they are I want to be able to give them all the advantages and opportunities I can!
My Project
As a teacher, I want to find books that will engage my students. Many of my students believe the only way to be engaged and enjoying a book is if it is fictional. When my students think about reading non-fiction they think of their textbooks. This is not the only type of non-fiction I want them to be exposed to. I want to show them that non-fiction can be interesting, exciting, and hard to put down. The non-fiction books I have in my classroom are old and worn out from years of use. It would be so nice to be able to stuff my classroom bookshelves with engaging non-fiction books, and to show my students that nonfiction is more than just a boring old textbook.
Having a new classroom library full of books would allow for my students to explore the world of books in a whole new way.
My favorite thing about my job is to watch a student fully captivated by a book who has struggled with reading or finding books that interest them. Every teacher wants to be able to give the gift of reading to her students. With the fulfillment of this project that gift will be given!
