Imagine if you could harness the energy of Kindergartners to help them on their journey to being readers. We plan to do just that with our Amazing Race to Reading!
We are a classroom of 20 students in a grade level of 5 Kindergarten classes.
We plan for our requested equipment to be shared with the entire grade level.
California's budget crisis has created an extreme funding challenge for our school district which is likely to last for some years to come. We continue to want the best for our students despite the lack of resources.
My Project
Our Amazing Race and accompanying resources work together to make stronger students, physically and academically. We are creating a better foundation for all our students and setting up each of them for life long success through building enthusiasm for reading.
In teams of two, on a taxi-trike, our students will race around a course, making "pit stops" to read high frequency words. Our police officer will direct traffic while other students hold up magnetic sight word clues. This is an engaging, hands-on method for practicing a rote skill. Rather than sitting at a desk or reviewing flash cards, we've created an experiential introduction to reading. We have a plan to engage students of all learning styles, particularly addressing the needs of under-served kinesthetic learners but meeting the needs of auditory and visual learners, too.
We intend for all our students to master our Kindergarten high frequency words and for them to have fun in the process.
Having a solid foundation of high frequency words as beginning readers, our Kindergartners will enter 1st grade with enthusiasm for reading and the basic skills on which to build a lifetime of learning.
Donations for this project allow us to provide our active young students with a meaningful alternative to traditional classroom instruction. In teams of two, our children will race to reading success!
