This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a new 7th grade teacher of gifted students in the South East Side of Chicago. My school resides in a high need community. We are completely underfunded and in need of high quality novels.

One of the main subjects that students are deficient in, is history. My goal for my students is, through literature, to gain understanding of some of the wars, cultures of other countries, and obstacles people had to overcome to gain self-fulfillment. One of the novels I chose, "Bound," by Donna Jo Napoli, will be used for whole group discussion. The rest of the novels will be used for small group literature circles. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their novels in a smaller group to dissect them in a more intricate way.

We need 30 copies of the novel Bound and five copies each nine other historical novels novels for literature circle discussions. The novels I have selected for literature circles will keep my students interested, and in awe of some of the things that occurred in the past. Students will have the opportunity to present their novels and reflections to the entire classroom. Also, they will have the opportunity to see the past through the eyes of fictional characters. My overall goal is to get my students interested in the study of History.

Your help will ensure that my students, through literature, become informed of some of the anguish and pain that was inflicted on people in the past. They will learn what they had to overcome to continue with their lives.
