Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 11th grade American Literature in a high-need community. 80% of our students qualify for free lunch because they come from low income households. I teach great kids who need and deserve a great educational experience.

That is why I would like to teach The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to my students. This classic work of American Literature is one of the most frequently banned books in the history of literature. The novel raises issues of race relations, censorship and civil disobedience. All of these topics are as relevant today as they were over 100 years ago. I would like to take an interdisciplinary approach to teaching this novel, and incorporate memoirs of fugitive slaves, the Southern Code of Honor, rules of dueling, and even an interview with a 1990s gang member. In this way, my students will be able to read a classic and yet still be able to relate it to their lives, communities and to their American History classes.

To accomplish this task, I am asking for 50 copies of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which is enough for two classes of American Literature students to each have their own copy of the book to read. I would also like the novel on cd so we can listen to parts of it in class, as well as a A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents in order to teach the novel through an interdisciplinary approach.

These materials will help me provide my students with the college preparatory education that they deserve. You will make it possible for my students to continue on their path as great readers, writers and thinkers. Your help truly makes a difference in the lives of students. Thank you.
