My Students
Have you ever walked through a hallway and heard the sounds of giggles and excitement? My classroom brings smiles to my face just thinking about my students. What do they love? An engaging read aloud! Mo Willems's Piggie and Gerald Adventures has brought lots of giggles into my classroom.
I teach five very bubbly, excitable and amazing first and second graders in a ranching community.
Many of the students will come in their work boots as they just finished up a chore on their property that morning. Our school is a small public one room school. We service grades kindergarten through sixth grade. This year our school has a grand total of 9 students in five different grades. Although we are a public school we are not funded the same way. Our school library has some engaging books but it doesn'Ât have any current, popular lower grade level books. When our Bookmobile comes I always pick out a few Piggie and Gerald books because it engages my students and shows them how exciting reading can be. These books are exciting, the pictures are amazing and I read it as if it were a child's Saturday morning cartoon show. Right after I finish, I hear my students say "read it again!"
My Project
I plan to use these books as a tool to get my students interested in reading. These will also give my students the opportunity to read familiar books in the classroom independently and continue to be engaged in reading the books in our class library. My students read these over and over again and I know that this is what is getting them interested in becoming readers.
As a child I remember reading The Baby-Sitters Club, Berenstain Bears, Frances and Goosebumps books.
Those series made me into the reader I am today by having alluring plots, vivid pictures and creative writing. I want engaged and excited readers. By having these books I know my students will continue to have a yearning to learn how to read.
