Help me give my students the gift of a novel that explores poverty and culture's relationship with one's identity.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year, I took a new approach to designing my curriculum and let my students choose the books and topics we covered in class. By putting them in the driver's seat this year, I've seen an upward trend of engagement. Since students specifically chose this book, I am confident that they will be overjoyed to learn it's been added to our class library.
When I asked my students why they selected this book, they expressed that they felt like this story might be something they could relate to, especially considering their backgrounds and the socio-economically diverse community where they currently live.
They shared how their town is often viewed as overly privileged; however, they know from their own experiences that poverty does, in fact, exist in this city. When I shared the short description of the book, my students instantly mentioned how they feel impacted by a similar juxtaposition of poverty with ultra-wealthy people. Many students come to this continuation high school because they do not fit the standard kid from Carlsbad mold: even before reading the book, they felt a connection with the 14-year-old protagonist of this story.
My students are a very unique group of amazing young people. I teach at a continuation high school that serves our most at-risk population in Carlsbad. This school has become a haven for students who need extra support, learn better in a smaller setting, interact with adults who are truly invested in their future, and seek a supportive and empowering environment. They are all amazing kids who need something different to help them find their path to their diplomas.
