Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th grade math at Bateman, a Chicago Public School. The school's population is predominately Latino and 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Every year, I teach 90+ general education, bilingual and special education students. The children are a fantastic bunch of kids, who deserve the very best education we can offer.
While I teach in a departmentalized situation in which each of the teachers in my cycle focuses on a different academic area, I am in a very lucky professional situation where I work with other very supportive teachers. There have been many times when the social studies and language arts teacher have completed activities in their classroom to compliment my math instruction. Through this proposal I hope to return the favor and encourage my mathematicians to engage in literature based activities, which will increase their reading ability.
I have found that a majority of my students really enjoy the content area of math. This is especially true of our English Language Learners, because math is a universal language! What I have noticed however, is that some of these students are reluctant readers. Everyday, I watch some students avoid independent reading time. I want to use my students' love of math to inspire them to read more! Thankfully, there is a wealth of great math based literature available today. I need this literature as part of my classroom library to motivate and engage my students.
Throughout my schooling, I had two great academic loves...math and reading. The donation of these math based literature books combines these interests. Please help turn my math loving students into lifelong readers!
