My Students
Somewhere deep in the heart of the Midwest lies our city. It is the quintessential rural town that has always been described in books, television, and movies since the beginning of time. Families have lived here for generations and take pride in everything that the small town has to offer. The townspeople come out in force at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, as well as the Strawberry Festival. They crowd the stands to see their hometown team play ball and line the streets during the annual homecoming parade. It is, indeed, a tiny piece of Midwestern paradise.
Our high school special education classroom is a place of growth in academics, personality, and citizenship.
We celebrate each other's successes while learning from each other's mistakes; in short, we try our best and come together as one team with the common goal of becoming productive citizens in a global society.
My students don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of; instead, they embrace them and the challenges they pose without fear.
My Project
As a part of the transition process, special education students need to learn about a variety of topics that deal with living a successful, independent life. It can be incredibly difficult to find materials that will work for my students but are also school-appropriate. A great author for them to learn from is the award-winning author, Sean Covey.
The 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make: A Guide for Teens: Updated for the Digital Age, is the book that I am requesting.
It will help my high school students figure out how to approach the six major challenges of being a teenager: gaining self-esteem, dealing with their parents, making friends, being wise about sex, coping with substances, and succeeding at school and planning a career. Covey understands the pain and confusion that teens and their parents experience in the face of these weighty, life-changing, and common difficulties. He shows teens how to use the 7 Habits to cope with, manage, and ultimately conquer each challenge—and become happier and more productive. By learning about the 6 most important decision they will ever make, students will have an opportunity to discover not only themselves, but their values as well.
