That's Not Trash! A STEM-Inspired Composting Adventure

My students need a Worm Composter Classroom Kit and books about composting to start our very own worm composting system!

My Students

This year I will be teaching first grade in a small charter school serving grades VPK-6 on central Florida's east coast. My class is a diverse group of learners, excited for the projects we will embark upon this year.

Though some of our learners face barriers due to income or language, we do all we can to support their growth.

Because of our small size, we are able to get to know the students and their families well and respond to their individual needs. We are small but mighty, supporting one another through after-school clubs, tutoring, and fun family events!

My Project

My students will be tasked this year with helping the Nature Club find ways to support our school gardening projects. As scientists, they will research and implement a worm composting system. Not only will this strengthen their problem-solving skills, it will help them see how they can make important changes in their school community.

They will also inspire other students in the school to think about how their actions impact the environment.

Through writing, they will share what they have learned with other grade levels. Throughout this project, we will incorporate math, reading, and writing, making this an interdisciplinary unit of study
