My Students

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." Martin Luther King, Jr. The "little children" in my 2/3 class need to learn about our struggle for Civil Rights in the U.S.

My students are 7, 8, and 9 years old.

At this age, they have a finely tuned sense of what is unfair, and discrimination is at the top of their list of unfair things. By learning about Civil Rights, they increase their empathy and expand their world, helping to ensure that Dr. King's words will continue to live on, and we will all be judged by the content of our character.

My Project

With these books in the hands of these children, we will be able to explore the injustices of the past and the triumphs of heroic leaders like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. We will see the extent of segregation and the power of peaceful protest. These young children will see the photos, hear the words, and experience the music of a movement that changed the way we live in this country. These children will be inspired to go forward and work for social justice in the communities of their future.

I believe that this important learning can change the lives of my students, and also those around them.

Their parents will be impacted, their families will be further educated, and perhaps others in the community will be inspired to work for civil rights, now and in the future.
