This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever wanted to watch the life cycle of a duck or chicken and care for the chicks and ducklings after they hatch? Imagine how exciting this opportunity would be for fifth graders and kindergarten students.
The students I work with live in a low socioeconomic area.
They do not come to school with a lot of experiences or background knowledge about many things. A majority of these children are learning English as their second language. Real and exciting experiences and opportunities, help them develop their language better, make the academics more comprehensible, and provide them with more relevant and motivating reading and writing opportunities.
My Project
I have requested an incubator, one dozen duck and chicken eggs, and nonfiction books on the life cycle of ducks and chickens in order to excite the students about science, reading, and writing. This project will be an exciting opportunity for the fifth graders. Not only will they observe these life cycles, write and record information about the process, read about and research more information for, and care for these animals once they have hatched, the fifth graders will also be teamed up with a kindergarten buddy to help them observe the life cycle and write one or two sentences about it. This project will enhance both my fifth graders knowledge of science as well as their writing skills. What better way to learn the conventions of writing than to teach it to someone else. This is what each fifth grader will be doing with their Kindergarten buddy. The Kindergarten students will also gain knowledge of science and have more rich and real experiences to write about through this project.
Your donation to this project will help both Kindergarten students and fifth graders learn more about science and enhance their writing skills and opportunities.
This project will also help the students work with others by having the fifth graders work on teaching and helping their Kindergarten buddy write 1 or 2 complete sentences correctly. The materials for this project will provide such an exciting and motivating opportunity for these children to learn and improve so many different skills.
