My Students
I teach in a Title I Middle School. My students all have some learning disability or other impairment that interferes with their success in school. Approximately ten percent are English Language Learners.
My students are adolescents with all the developmental issues that accompany the early teen years with the added stress and self-consciousness of learning difficulties.
These students do not typically have lots of resources at home and do not enjoy reading. Research shows how time spent reading improves reading ability and success in school. Furthermore, being academically successful decreases the likelihood of dropping out of High School.
My Project
My students are about to embark on a learning adventure of historical fiction. We will learn about the Holocaust and Nazi Germany as the background setting of our stories. This is a great opportunity for my students to learn about an important era in history as well as apply the literary foundations we have been developing to increase comprehension.
The special education population at my school has increased at a much higher rate than the available resources.
As a result, many of the things in my classroom are outdated. We have seating that is not very comfortable and is sometimes inadequate to hold the large frame of some of my students. In addition, since my students have learning disabilities and challenges, we all need to read the same book together to enhance understanding and a deeper comprehension. The books in our class set are literally falling apart.
The seating will provide adequate support and comfort for my students as they learn. The quality books will limit distractions with missing and torn pages. I believe that these supplies will provide a positive learning environment and experience for my students. I hope that with positive learning experiences, they will develop a love of learning and commitment to their education.
