Energy, passion, excitement and determination are all words that come to mind when I'm asked to describe the room full of scholars that walk in my door every morning for 180 days. Their home lives are varied and a large percentage of them come from families that qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of them have very supportive, involved parents, and others have parents whose attention is spread very thin. But no matter their lives at home, they are so excited to learn new things and love coming to school each day!
My Project
I pride myself on having built a very large classroom library using personal funds. However, the resources I use to find affordable books don't always have a very diverse selection. In addition, the books I do already own with diverse characters are also the ones that tend to get "loved" the most.
I want my classroom library to reflect the diversity in our community and our school, with strong role models as main characters.
It is much easier to get students excited and engaged in reading when they can see themselves reflected in the powerful characters of great texts. I also use these texts to support discussions about social problem solving and leadership skills through read alouds.
