My Students

I teach at a small middle school in a small school district. The district I teach in only has one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. The majority of the students live in poverty and are homeless. What I mean by homeless is that the parent(s) and the children are living with other relatives, because they do not have a home of their own. The middle school I teach at is a Title I school, which means that we receive funds from the government to get some of the resources that we need. In addition, the students all receive free lunch and breakfast every day.

My goal every day, is to make my classroom a safe, learning environment, so that my students work toward being successful scholars every day.

I try to make learning as engaging as I can, because I know that many students can be turned off from it because they feel school is boring. I teach my students that history happens every day and they are a part of it. I love seeing the expressions on their faces when they begin to discuss historical events.

My Project

After a long, hard day at school, my students need some snacks to pick them up during afterschool tutorials. I will be starting my afterschool tutorials at school in December, and many of my kids are hungry again by the time they go home at the end of the regular school day. What happens if they have to stay for afterschool tutorials? They are still hungry. I created this project in order to obtain some fun, delicious snacks my 8th graders would love to have during afterschool tutorials. These snacks will help them stay alert and focused and might be a way to get them to stay every day for extra help. I know many of them come to school for lunch and breakfast, and I want to make sure my students leave school with a full stomach after working hard all day long, so that they can be successful in my classroom.
