My Students

Graphing calculators are a basic and essential device for any higher level high school mathematics course. While they are expensive, they are an investment in student achievement.

I teach algebra and geometry to 9th-12th grade students at a rural high school in Alabama.

My school is a Title I school, which means that a large percentage of students meet the criteria for living at or below the poverty line. 92% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. It is unrealistic for me to ask parents to spend $150 on a quality graphing calculator when many families struggle to meet basic needs. Alabama schools have been under budget prorations for the past several years, and there is limited funding for classroom instructional supplies.

My Project

My Project: Despite these challenges, my students are hard working and have big goals. In 11th grade, all students are given the opportunity to take the ACT exam. The score a student earns on this exam can determine his or her admittance into their desired university as well as scholarship awards. Students need every available tool to do their best on this exam. One such need is advanced graphing calculators. Graphing calculators will not solve equations for the students, rather, they provide hands-on learning and visual representation of learned skills. Students must apply the concepts they have learned to use the calculator to explore skills more in-depth. I am trying to build a classroom set of graphing calculators, a few at a time, so that each student in my class can make use of this valuable tool in my math class as well as on the high-stakes ACT test. I am requesting one graphing calculator to grow our class set and one charging station to properly charge our existing calculators.

Because of generous donors like you, all my students will be able to use a graphing calculator in math class whether they are able to purchase their own or not.

Thanks to the DonorsChoose.org family, I have twenty-four graphing calculators for my classroom. We only need a few more in order for each student to have his or her own graphing calculator to use in class. My students truly do deserve every chance to learn and succeed! Thank you so much for considering a donation to my worthy students.
