This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are resilient, thoughtful, and learning that there’s more than one way to be heard. Some are ready to speak up boldly. Others are still gathering the courage. This project honors both.

“Thank You to Those Who’ve Spoken Up (and Those Still Waiting)” is about creating space for reflection, privacy, and expression.

Many of my students come from communities where silence was a survival skill. In our classroom, we work to rebuild that trust—by making every voice feel valued.

The lap desks will allow students to write or reflect wherever they feel safest—away from the crowd if needed. Whether they’re processing a difficult topic, journaling about identity, or responding to prompts about justice, they’ll have the flexibility to do it on their own terms.

The locking suggestion box gives students a way to share concerns, questions, or even ideas anonymously. For those who aren’t ready to speak out loud, it becomes a first step toward advocacy. It also shows that silence doesn’t mean disengagement—just that some students need a safer path to expression.

This project supports racial justice and representation by affirming that every student, no matter how quiet, deserves the chance to share their truth. It builds a classroom culture where courage takes many forms—and where no voice is overlooked.
