My Students

Our 5th-grade class is very diverse. We come from a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. We speak different languages and perform on a variety of different academic ability levels. We all come to school each day with a wide range of gifts, talents, interests, issues, hopes, and fears.

Despite these differences, there are so many more ways we are alike and connected.

None of us have been in classrooms since March. We finished the year virtually and are adjusting to a new "normal." We are uncertain about what this school year will look like, but we know we will not be using and sharing materials as we would have during lessons on a typical school day in years past. We are all, however, excited to get back to learning and we cannot wait to share what we know. We are still curious, will ask a lot of questions, and will celebrate when we are successful at learning new things. Most importantly, we will work hard while appreciating everyone's unique voice and talents to support our varying needs in order to succeed. We know our teamwork is what will make our dreams work!

My Project

For this project, I am requesting books we can use during our reading block to enhance and support learning across the curriculum - specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). For example, Ada's Violin: The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay correlates to our study of sound in science, and A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story ties into a variety of our science climate objectives. I'm also asking for AngLegS as part of a design challenge extension activity.

These books reflect the growing diversity we encounter as global citizens, model problem solving from beyond our community, and redefine the image of leadership.

From Lonnie Johnson to Garrett Morgan and Rosie Revere to Iggy Peck, the strong characters in these books depict women, minorities, and people with disabilities being successful, overcoming adversity, leading in their chosen fields, and reaching their dreams. The people represented in these stories are role models I want all my students to learn about and to admire. I believe adding these titles to our class library will impact the developing perceptions my students have about STEAM careers and who can be successful leaders in those jobs in the future.
