Texts for Success: Reading Recovery Books for First Graders
My students need daily opportunities to read a wide range of high-quality Reading Recovery leveled texts. These books will help me meet our lowest-achieving students' unique, individual needs while helping them meet grade level expectations.

My Students
My students, from Centerville, Ohio, are part of a literacy support program that helps at-risk children gain the needed skills and strategies to become confident, independent readers. This program gives children from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive both in individual lessons and in small groups. My kindergarteners and first graders are ready to learn, and I hope to help them reach their full potential as independent readers and writers. They love to learn, and I thoroughly enjoy helping to foster a love of reading that will benefit them for a lifetime.
My Project
These books were chosen from a list of approved Reading Recovery titles and will help struggling readers experience success in reading. My goal is to provide powerful early intervention while fostering a love of reading. My students find reading difficult and often do not look at themselves as readers. I have chosen these books with these struggling readers in mind and hope to use them to expand their ability to problem-solve, read more complex texts, read more fluently, and improve their thinking within, beyond, and about the texts.
I am hoping to decrease the chance of the achievement gap widening for at-risk students in later grades by having the ability to carefully select titles that will engage students in the reading process, and help them to become more competent, independent, strategic readers.
I will be able to provide just the right amount of support and challenge so that each book will offer an opportunity to learn and strengthen problem-solving skills. I believe that preventing literacy difficulties early in a child's school career can help a child reach his or her full potential as a learner.
