Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students are natural scientists. They often go through the scientific method without thinking about it. They start with a question about their daily schedule and how to improve the flow of their day and end up with unique solutions or products that solve problems. This type of thinking is important for them to internalize.

I hope that by doing science fair, students will see themselves as scientists and appreciate how they are applying the method to their everyday lives.

The textbook resources are to help my students with the projects that they come up with. Students often have high expectations such as 'finding the cure for cancer' but I want them to see the small techniques that build up their skills to tackling such a big project or that allow them to see how a smaller project could lead to a much deeper understanding of one part of an illness. I hope that the textbooks and reference materials will help students to see the types of advanced research projects that can be done with DNA, proteins and some of the equipment we have in class.

The students also compete at State and International Leadership Conferences for health professionals. Some of the textbooks are resources and study materials for the competitions. My students have a special passion for medical diagnostics and enjoy working with lab equipment. I hope that the study materials will encourage students to continue with their passion. Students who do well at competition have the validation that they are skillful and knowledgeable and become motivated to continue on with their health care careers.
