Text-to-Speech Provides Access to All Reading Materials

Help me give my students an assistive reading tool that can easily scan any text the student needs, then uses text-to-speech back, in English or 112 other languages.

My Project

We teach special education in a resource setting, serving grades K-6 in person. Our students have a range of disabilities including specific learning disabilities (which includes dyslexia), communication disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and health conditions that affect learning. We have several students who struggle with basic reading skills and they have a difficult time accessing the curriculum in both the resource setting and the regular classroom.

This pen reader would give some of our struggling readers better access to any reading material they come across at school.

Students who are unable to decode the text on their own would still be able to participate in comprehension and writing activities without requiring one-on-one support from the teacher for every step. Participation in other subject areas such as science and social studies would be greatly enhanced, as well.

Several of our students also have a difficult time writing a simple sentence because they forget what they planned to write. With the recording capabilities, they would be able to record themselves dictating a sentence, then listen to the memo while they write it down.

We have a student who has only been in the country for a short time and this would also provide support for him to understand the text through the translation feature, allowing him to participate more fully with the class.
