Testing the NYC Waters...For Contaminants

My students need a water pollution detection lab kit to test the water quality in drinking water in NYC public schools.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Citron's classroom raised $706

This project is fully funded

My Students

Students in my environmental science classes read, write and debate about environmental issues regarding pollution and its impact, but do not have access to lab equipment that allows them to gather and analyze pollution data in a hands-on, relevant way.

My students attend an urban high school with over 3300 students.

The school is considered a magnet school for science and math, but is also a Title One school. Many of my students are first generation Americans and are highly motivated and dedicated young people, who are interested in pursuing environmental science or environmental engineering as a major in college and eventually a career.

My Project

Students in my AP environmental science class will learn the importance of analyzing water samples collected over many months in various New York City Schools. They will then develop drinking water quality report for schools to use in understanding what is in their drinking water. This will teach my students how to perform serious environmental field tests and learn the biology and chemistry surrounding water quality and pollution. In addition, my students, using their real time water quality data will learn how to construct Excel graphs and write an environmental impact statement for the purpose of creating water quality reports that will be shared with students and teachers in the schools where the water was analyzed.

The best way to make science meaningful is by applying it in the real world.

Using a water quality assessment kit allows then to do that. The application of what is discussed and learned in the classroom adds significance and relevance as well as a multi-sensory experience, all of which enhances and broadens knowledge and interest in science.
