Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school in Southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and busing restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.

However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.

Because I teach a new program, called Transitional Kindergarten, I have the unique opportunity to provide these students with an additional year of school experience where I can use music, art, and manipulatives to teach them academics, social skills, and good school habits. There are no resources for this particular program beyond number and letter writing and recognition. I am responsible for providing them with the materials and lessons that are essential to a productive and positive school experience.

My Project

Our students are required to take all state and district tests on their iPad. However, students are not supplied with headphones, which makes focusing difficult. This has a large impact on their scores.

New state and district standards have increased and students are being tested more than ever.

In order to make them as successful as possible, I keep running records for testing every day. This creates a large amount of paperwork and data. We need a better alternative for maintaining records so students do not have to repeat tests.

By having a file system that is accessible to everyone, anyone who has time to test students will be able to alter records.
