This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
With these materials, students will perform clinical tests relating to the human body.
Through a hands-on approach, students will make connections to the content by exploring real-world scenarios.
For the first activity, students assume roles of clinical blood technicians of a hospital. They are called to the emergency room, where they find an injured man. His right thigh has been ripped open, and the emergency room medical team is trying to stop the flow of blood from a major artery. They know that the hospital’s blood bank was depleted when accident victims from a major pile-up on the Interstate were airlifted to the hospital. A nurse quickly explains that the man has four friends in the emergency waiting room who are eager to donate blood. Students collect blood samples from the injured man (Mike) and his four friends (Kim, Ajax, June, and Frank.) They will then test each blood type to determine which, if any, of these people can donate blood to save Mike's life.
In the second activity, students will perform five important component tests of clinical urinalysis: color, pH, specific gravity, glucose, and protein. The Low, Normal, and High simulated urine samples are designed to produce results indicative of those characteristics. Students will also be provided with two unknown simulated urine samples for urinalysis, and will be asked to report and interpret the results.
