Terror in Text and Screen: a Cultural Study of Monsters
Help me give my students spine-chilling stories that spark critical thinking and creativity!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project supports a new Literary Analysis and Film Studies course centered on horror—a genre that reveals as much about our fears as it does about our history, identity, and culture. Students will read horror literature from diverse eras and cultures, analyzing how monsters reflect the anxieties of a particular time and place. They’ll also study how these narratives evolve through film, developing visual literacy alongside traditional close reading skills.
By funding this project, you’ll help us purchase class sets of horror novels that range from cornerstones like "Dracula" to modern classics like "Carrie."
These texts, paired with companion films, will give students the opportunity to explore how fear functions in society, how stories change when adapted for the screen, and how art—whether written or visual—can help us process the world around us.
Your support means students will have access to engaging, rigorous texts that challenge them to think critically, discuss meaningfully, and engage creatively. With your help, they won’t just consume horror—they’ll learn how to analyze, question, and even create it.
