Terrific Transitional Kinder

My students need non-fiction material and magazines to help them get ready to meet the Common Core Standards, and music to enrich their lives.

My Students

Four and a half year olds need to move, play and explore. These kids are getting their first exposure to "big kid" school in Transitional Kindergarten and they are yearning for fun, excitement, and learning in a new way. These materials will help guide them through the learning needed for Kindergarten.

My students are an excited and nervous group of young learners who are just starting school.

Our school is small and our classroom draws students from many different areas. We work hard to build a community, to give back to the community, and to explore our community around us. My students are eager and funny. They love to listen to stories and tell them. They are interested in nature, digging, bugs, and writing. They want to dance, jump, and wrestle with each other. Music is a big part of our classroom and they love to sing everyday. Being with four year old is a constant party in motion.

My Project

Students will become familiar with magazines and practice identifying basic concepts of print such as author, illustrator, title. The magazines will help them understand written language and the way words are written (right to left). They will also become more aware of current events and the world around them. By taking the magazines home, they will be able to share the learning with their families. The animal books will provide another source of non-fiction in a relatable manner. The use of families is an integral part of our curriculum and a visit to either the Zoo or Sea World would be a great way to end our study of families and animals. Having books in their hands helps them understand the concepts better. Musical instruments will help them learn rhythm, sharing, beat, and how to get along with others. They might create their own band or learn a new way to play an instrument. Anything musical will enrich their academic learning and keep their interest.

With classroom budgets for materials and supplies so limited, the amount of things needed to enhance learning usually comes out of the teacher's own pocket.

Donations for these projects will help my students stay motivated, enjoy learning through play, and give them a greater sense of stability heading into Kindergarten.
