This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our oldest computer recently stopped working. My students need a new computer so that they could have access to one during small group independent work time. With it, they could benefit from engaging on-line activities that reinforce academic standards.
Our school is located in Southern California.
It is a Title I school where most children come from socioeconomically disadvantaged families and receive free or reduced meals. My class is made up of 22 inquisitive kindergarten students with dynamic personalities. They have diverse backgrounds and abilities. Some are just learning letters and sounds while some are able to read beginning books on their own. What they do have in common is that they are enthusiastic about coming to school. They are engaged when I do with visual presentations on the computer using our projector. They also look forward to working on the computer where they are able to practice their literacy and math skills.
My Project
The tablet computer would be used by my students to enhance their literacy and math skills through a variety of learning applications and educational websites. Because of the rich resources available on-line, meeting the diverse needs of students would be more feasible. Struggling students would get needed practice on specific areas such as number/letter/sound recognition, blending sounds to form words, and recognizing high frequency words. More advanced students could access enrichment activities through on-line books and our math and language arts series.
Using the tablet touch screen to input student responses on our district assessment program minimizes testing errors. Since it is portable, students could be tested in the quietest area of the room. Students would be able to know the results of assessments immediately and be able to set personal goals for future assessments. I would be able to more readily monitor their progress and plan lessons and activities accordingly.
My students would truly benefit from having a tablet computer in the classroom.
It would increase their access to a multitude of educational applications and resources. While their basic reading and math skills are enhanced, their computer literacy would be enriched. An additional computer means more computer time to practice skills to help them with academic standards. They would gain more ownership of their learning since they would be able to immediately see their assessment results.
