Terrarium (Paludarium) Finishing Touches

My Students

Live Animals in the Classroom! Can you think of a better high interest visual than that? A 45-gallon tank is almost finished on its way to become a river system. To go along with our units on ecosystems and their organisms, we have decided to start an additional tank to raise brine shrimp.

My students are small town, Appalachian Mountain kids who live outside of the "big" city of Asheville, near the Tennessee border in a small town.

It is a public school with low ethnic diversity but high socio-economic diversity. They have a real interest in hands-on, inquiry based learning, especially if it deals with critters and the outdoors.

My Project

The ability of the students to observe ecosystems different from their own will hopefully get their interest level in biology way up. A 45-gallon tank has been almost transformed into a tropical river system but the final pieces of cork for completion are still needed. The class also has decided to raise brine shrimp (sea monkeys) in a secondary tank as a project to observe and work with them as we move through the curriculum. The sea monkeys will be used for observations while we discuss population genetics as well as examined under microscopes when we discuss arthropods.

Any item that gets the students interest makes learning about it that much easier and more fun.

Allowing the students to observe the sea monkeys (brine shrimp) and have the tropical river tank added to the fish tank and carnivorous plant tanks I have already created gives us wonderful, in-class examples of different ecosystems and the interdependence of living things.
