Temperature in Color: Exploring Science in the World Around Us

Help me give my students a state of the art scientific measuring device that can help students understand the effects of temperature in projects and in the environment around them.

My Project

For the fall of 2022 Class 2.0 grant, I am respectfully requesting a Thermal Imaging Camera. This tool shows variations in color from below freezing to over 750 degrees Fahrenheit!

Although this proposal is for science class, there are many classes that can benefit from this tool, whether the teacher is using the camera and displaying the images for an experiment, or if students are using the camera as a group or individually for projects or activities.

Below are some example projects for a variety of classes.

In science classes, students can measure the length of a specific section of sidewalk when it is hot outside, then measure the same section of concrete again when it is cold to see how much the temperature influenced expansion and contraction. Students could also use the device for simple experiments, like sprinkling salt on an ice cube to see the thermal change. The list for science applications could go on and on.

In cooking classes, the camera can be used for kitchen safety lessons. Opening an over that has been cooking food for a while can be dangerous if a hot surface is touched. Using the camera, students can see what is hot, and how hot that part is.

In driver education, the temperature and air pressure of the driver education car’s tires could be measured in the cool morning before the car has been driven, then these measurements could be taken in the afternoon when the tires are warmer. Tire pressure readings could be compared and discussed.

We are excited about integrating an instrument like a thermal camera into a variety of lessons. Overall, it is hoped that students will be more interested in learning!
