This project is fully funded

I teach English to struggling readers and writers in an inner city Chicago high school. My students live in areas that are filled with violence, gangs, domestic abuse, and poverty. It is difficult for them to deal with all of the negativity going on in their neighborhoods. I've tried to help them see how writing can help them deal with the tough stuff in their lives. Recently, my students and I have been reading many published diaries, such as "Freedom Writers Diary," "The Diary of Anne Frank," and "Zlata's Diary." My students have come to the conclusion that every day stories can be very valuable. They have asked me if they could start journaling as a way to tell their stories. Unfortunately, not all of my students have ready access to school supplies. This means that some of them do not have their own journals. I have about 60 students, and it's not easy for a teacher who supplies many of the resources for her classroom to also buy 60 journals for all her students. We will spend the rest of the school year journaling about "Our America." This will help the students think about their neighborhoods and how they need to be changed. This will also give them an outlet to vent about the issues in their lives in a productive way.
