Tell Me A Story

I teach third year Spanish to a group of 11th and 12th graders who never thought they would hear themselves actually communicating in a second language.

Many of these approximately 100 kids tell me they signed up for the elective Spanish 3 class because they heard they would actually learn to talk. By extension, they are thrilled to know that they can also call on their "inner child" and create stories just like they did in elementary school, only in a foreign language. When I introduced the "create a children's story" project, I only planned on the student sharing their stories among themselves. The daughter of an ELL teacher (English Language Learners) asked me if we could share them with Hispanic students that her mother taught. I wanted to donate these books to the elementary schools to use, but also want a record of them for my own use. And I want the 20 elementary schools in our district to have access to as many books as possible.

A webcam would make it possible for my students to record themselves reading their book (and showing the pictures) so that I can upload their recordings to the computer and create a digital library. I can burn copies of my digital library to share with schools, and also distribute the actual books created to schools.

Your help will enable my students to take this project beyond the doors of our classroom and share the love of reading and of books with Hispanic children who, in this country, often have little or no contact with the written version of their native language. As a non-consumable resource, this webcam will allow me to repeat this project and create more like it for years to come.
