Tell Me a Story: Building Literacy

My students need more opportunities to hear text read aloud. We need of a listening center for listening to books on tape or CD as well as hearing and practicing leveled readers!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Schultz's classroom raised $190

My Students

My class is a group of super energetic five and six year olds who love learning! They love to prove what they know in math and are so eager to improve their reading skills! We are a Title 1 school in a large urban district in Missouri where a large percentage of the children come from very low income households and receive breakfast and lunch here at school. The parents of my students care deeply for their children and do all they can to provide for them.

Like any teacher, I want the best for my students and will do all I can to ensure that they learn to their fullest potential.

Kindergarten aged students are such a joy to teach. They truly are little sponges and soak up so much information. Knowing the environments some of my students come from and the lack of stimulation some have had as infants and toddlers, I want to try to compensate wherever possible in order to help them be as successful in learning as they can be.

My Project

Certainly, I know that personally reading aloud to my students is best. I do that at least three times daily. However, it is imperative that I expose my kiddos to as many literacy opportunities as possible each day! Therefore , during station rotations, my students will participate in listening to read along stories as well as hearing and practicing leveled readers on CD.

It is proven that young children who are read aloud to are far more likely to become active readers and lifelong book lovers.

In order to assist my students in meeting their greatest potential, they must be exposed to as many pieces of literature as possible as well as have the opportunities to practice reading text at their own level.

It is my desire and my duty to provide as many opportunities as possible for my students to hear books and stories. As a book lover, I wish to instill the same love of reading in my students in order that they may have the freedom to explore whatever avenue of life they may choose.
