This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are like all students. They want to be heard! They know writing, particularly nonfiction writing, is an important skill, but motivation is difficult sometimes. They don't always see the relevancy of identifying the who, what, when, where, why, and how of a situation.

But introduce a camera and allow students to investigate meaningful topics, and interest in nonfiction writing explodes.

Students quickly discover, however, that their faces on camera isn't enough. There's preparation. And that preparation includes planning, writing, interviewing, and lots of reflection. Simply put, it's the pill in the peanut butter. Students end up engaging in higher-order thinking skills like identifying differences between closed and open-ended questions, text structures, and speaking and listening skills, all while having fun and generating a collaborative product of their own.

The items for this project are the hooks and necessary tools for a deeper dive into things like question formulation theory, planning and organizing writing, the elements of public speaking, and fundamentals of video and sound production.
