Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In 11th grade, students study the Civil Rights Movement, and later in the semester, the students will participate in their own Civil Rights project, in which they will work in groups to be activists for a Civil Rights issue they care about.
I teach 11th English at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch.
This is a very special international studies public charter school, which is a school of choice for these students. Every student who graduates from our school will have met the A-G requirements to enter a UC or CSU school. For many of these students, they will be the first generation in their families to attend college. This year, we have nearly 70 students taking AP Language. The students are reading memoirs by inspiration people, including people like Malala Yousafzai.
My Project
When we tried a project-based civil rights unit last year, encouraging students to engage in real life activism, we noticed that they leaned heavily on adults in their world to do the work for them. It seems that they think "I can't be an activist. I'm only a teenager."
Malala Yousafzai is only a teenager, yet she is changing the world. I believe that if students see this film and see how Malala uses her voice to change the world, they will be inspired to speak out about injustices they see in the world.
Almost all of our students come from families that struggle with poverty.
They rarely go to the movies, and when they do, I wish I could say that they are choosing documentaries, but most of the time, they are going with the flow and choosing the latest blockbuster action movie or romantic flick. This film is outside their normal realm, but I believe it will touch their hearts and inspire them to make a difference and appreciate the education they receive for free.
