My Project

From North America to the African Savannah; from the lochs of Scotland to the inner region of Mongolia or the heart of the Amazon! It does not matter; there; are some things that all teenagers have in common.

8th grade students will complete a two-part reading, research, and creative project.

They will read The Outsiders by SE Hinton. Afterwards, each student will conduct research on a particular country (geography, political structure, history, culture, and etc.)

Next, they will create a fictional teenager who lives in the researched country. Under the persona of this character, students will design a scrapbook journaling the every day life of the character as well as providing key information about their home life, community, region, and country.

Students will use the Epson printer, scrapbooks, and other materials to create a quality project.

A few years ago, my school district closed the school library, and now students do not have access to a printer while in school. Of course this makes it very difficult to expect them to complete nonelectronic projects or to provide printed copies of writing assignments.

I have taught this group of students for three years, and we make it work; even while providing quality assignments that address all styles of learners. This year, their learning inventory suggests that a large portion of my 8th grade students are both visual and kinesthetic learners. This project not only addresses these learning styles, but it would also celebrate their journey from tweens to teens moving beyond middle school into the high school world.

Furthermore, having a classroom printer would allow students access beyond this one time experience.
