My students think graphing calculators are cool -- that is, once they figure out how to find answers with them.
I teach in a small urban public high school. I have students of all skill levels (advanced to special education) in my 10th grade Algebra class.
None of my students own their own graphing calculators. We have some graphing calculators at my school, but we must share them among all the math and science classes in the school. Therefore not all students are able to use graphing calculators on a regular basis. Without regular practice with the graphing calculators, many of my students don't know how to use the calculator to their advantage on the state exam. Also, we have so few graphing calculators that we cannot even provide them to all students when they take the exam. This is out of compliance with the state guidelines, but more importantly it gives our students at an unfair disadvantage when they take the exam.
I am requesting 6 graphing calculators for my Algebra classroom. This will ensure that I will have at least one graphing calculator for every 4 or 5 students to share every day. When I can attain a set of 20 calculators through my school, these 6 additional calculators will allow each student to have their own graphing calculator to work with. Lastly, these graphing calculators will allow 6 additional students to have access to a graphing calculator (as required) during the state Algebra exam.
Your support will help my students succeed in math, which will open up doors for them when they go to college and enter the job market. You will also be doing your part to level the playing field for students of all backgrounds on the state Algebra exam.
