This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When you know better, you do better," Maya Angelou. My students need exposure about healthy living and behavior. Through this, they will learn a better lifestyle, transfer it to their children, teach their parents, and equally influence the society in a positive way.

My students come from lower socioeconomic families.

They come from the poor areas of Richmond, California. Bad food habits and lack of home knowledge of nutrition affect the health of our students. Such impact is transferred into the students learning. Obesity is a big issue among minority children and who may not have insurance. Often times, poor lifestyle and food result in violent behavior, defiance at school, tardiness and also drop out of school. Majority of our students are Hispanics and African American. Many students come to school hungry because their families are poor. As a result, they eat the cheapest and poorest foods, thereby exposing themselves to the risks of obesity and diabetes. Violence is high in this neighborhood, and as a result early exposure to education will make a difference.

My Project

Materials being ordered are basically resources to teach, encourage, impact, and create awareness of the importance of healthy life choices. The various health kits, CD-ROMs, and stickers will present colorful and vivid information about healthy living, food choices, and violence prevention. The computer tablet will help teacher access Internet resource wirelessly and make them easily available to the students. My students will learn about the dangers of eating fast and junk foods, and gain more knowledge about personal hygiene practices. Students will gain a good knowledge about diabetes, symptoms, care, and prevention. They will learn about the predisposing factors and some tips on self-management. Above all, they will be able to teach their parents or family members about the disease. The balls will help my students engage in physical activities which will in turn improve mood, emotions and increase concentration in the class.

Everybody will benefit from a healthy community.

Education about a disease creates awareness and empowers the individual to self-manage the disease or avoid issues that will make the situation worse. Healthy youths are an assurance of a healthy labor force. This project will save companies from contributing much to the health insurance and employees will produce more. It will teach kids to make good decisions about their food and health. It will save kids from drugs and violent engagement.
