Teen Ink for Aspiring Writers

My students need 30 copies of Teen Ink magazine monthly.

My Students

I work in a high poverty, high-needs school in upstate New York. Two years ago, the Board of Education gave us an awesome opportunity. They voted to let the English teachers create new electives that the students could take for English credit. We were able to create 8 new classes!

This means that once the kids pass the English Regents, they can choose what English class they want to take.

One of my elective classes is Creative Writing and the class is full of a fantastic bunch of aspiring writers. Since they chose the class, they actually want to write and read what other teens have written. They are excited to submit their work for publication.

My Project

So I bet you are thinking to yourself, "That's great! What more could she want?" With the recent budget cuts to education, we were left with very little money to purchase new books for these new electives. I need reading material to inspire my students. These Teen Ink magazines contain original artwork, photographs, poems and short stories created for teens by teens. Having a class set every month would give my students fresh inspiration. I would even like to see my students submit their work to Teen Ink. I was very lucky last year to have a project funded on Donors Choose for a class set of Teen Ink every month and my kids loved reading those issues. I want to be able to give that love of reading to my students again this year.
