Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school. Many students get free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and may only get the two meals a day they receive at the high school. The majority are also English Language Learners. My students are filled with personality and many have experienced hardship no sixteen-year-old should have experienced. Unfortunately, my students can barely bring in the basics they need to be a prepared learner in class (paper, pencil). But what they do bring is enthusiasm, positive attitude, and imagination. Our campus has a strong sense of community; we really are a family. We even have a supper program where students can eat dinner after school for free.

My Project

In my environmental science class we learn about the biodiversity and ecological value of the Amazon rainforest. I would love to bring the Amazon rainforest to my students with the Google Virtual Reality Expeditions set. I would love for them to see how high the tree canopies are. How the broadleaf forest stretches for miles weaving in and out of rivers. We could hike along the riparian zone and climb into a canoe and paddle up the Amazon River; the largest river in the entire world.

Having the Virtual Reality Google expeditions is going to help me bring the world and the National Park System to my students.

With this new technology my students can travel anywhere in the world, even the first National Park: Yellowstone. My students also go on hikes so we can use the drone to do a species diversity survey. Having these materials will allow me to expand my students’ worldview and help shape their environmental value system.

These materials will be used school wide and benefit hundreds of students every year. Any teacher at my school will be able to check out the materials for their students. The Google expeditions kit has over 400 virtual reality tours that is beneficial to teachers across all content areas.

During distance learning students will research what National Parks they want to visit to prepare them for when we come back face to face in the spring for blended learning. In addition, small groups of 11 students maximum (equipped with PPE) can a sign a waiver to be on campus for an outdoor Google Expeditions lesson. Students will learn how to do species diversity counts by using the San Diego zoo live web cams, which help prepare them for when they get to use the drone in person.
