My Students
Being a teenager is hard enough. Can you imagine being displaced and having to move away from everything and everyone that you've ever known? And then, ending up in a high school where you don't even speak the language? That's reality for my ESL students.
Teenagers from around the world grace my doors each and every day.
They have had to leave their homelands for a variety of reasons and come to me as refugees and immigrants looking for a better, safer life.
It is in my room that we help them learn the English language and also how to acclimate to life in a new culture. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming for them.
Just as you and I enjoy escaping into a good book, these children do as well.
My Project
The teen book collections that I have requested encompass both high interest, low readability selections as well as sets that have a variety of interesting topics that will capture the attention of these young men and women.
Reading these books will not only enhances vocabulary development, but will also aid in students' learning, practicing and mastering reading skills.
In addition, students will be exposed to stories that will help them understand different cultures, teen experiences and may even help them acclimate to their new homeland a little easier.
The books will be housed in our class library and can be utilized during whole and small group instruction as well as during independent reading sessions.
Having these teen book collections will provide us endless opportunities when it comes to utilizing literature in the class.
In addition, I am hoping by providing a variety of subject matter, that my students will find books they like and will learn to love reading as I do.
Just as important, these teen collections will offer my students an opportunity to sit back in a stress free environment where they can relax and escape reality, even if just for a little while!
