This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Title I school in Southern California. The majority of these students are English learners from the local communities of low socioeconomic status. I am so grateful to work with such an awesome group of scholars! Unfortunately, many live in less than desirable areas, often multiple families in one home. These families generally do not have the means to provide their children with life experiences outside of these communities.

Although 85% of WES students are identified as low-income, their enthusiasm and positive attitudes shine through regardless of personal circumstances.

These kiddos come to school eager and motivated to learn. They're yearning for new technology! These Fifth grade gifted and talented (GATE) students are eager to dabble in computer science.

My ultimate goal is help students to become proficient in digital literacy. It is also a top priority to teach students how to safely utilize the internet as a research and life tool. Unfortunately, with limited resources, one of our biggest hurdles is access to critical items such as technology and art supplies. As an educator, provide learning experiences that can be translated into life experiences can be difficult; however, our biggest challenge is insubstantial access to technology.

My Project

My students need Sphero SPRK+ STEAM Educational Robots. Computer programming and coding are quickly becoming the jobs of the future and necessary to succeed in our fast-paced world. The Sphero SPRK+ STEAM Educational Robots will be immediately integrated into the curriculum through the coding "block based" interface. Students will learn basic computer programming and coding using the SPRK+ STEAM Educational Robots through a block interface to create scripts coding basic operations, actions, and controls. The coding lessons with the Sphero SPRK+ STEAM Educational Robots will allow students how to become proficient with basic coding and computer programming. These robots will provide students the opportunity to also learn about data collection and measurements for each Sphero experiment through the use of basic math functions. The SPRK+ STEAM Educational Robots promote advanced logic. These tools can also teach students text programming and how to write JavaScript.

It is with these tools that my students can build an intellectual foundation in coding and computer programming, all while having fun!
