My Students
Life gives us all problems to solve, and so students come into class and begin practicing problem solving skills. Students spend their efforts thinking analytically, discussing with peers, making a plan, and then using the tools at hand to put their problem solving plan into action.
My students are eighth and ninth graders who have made the choice to attend a charter school whose focus is on science and technology.
They come from all parts of the valley, some traveling more than an hour each way to be able to attend our school.
As you can imagine, math is a large part of our curriculum. Our teachers work together to collaborate unit plans that span across curriculum barriers. The result is maximum student engagement.
Our school has robotics clubs, programming classes, Lego League... Our students are competitive and striving for success.
My Project
Students will be able to analyze the graphs of equations and inequalities on these graphing calculators, thus freeing up the time it would take to draw each graph by hand. This will afford them more time to spend solving problems. The graphing calculators will give them more opportunity to compare their results with the other students. They will become better skilled at critiquing the work of others and explaining their own reasoning.
By helping to fund this project you will help our students to have a deeper understanding of the mathematics behind the problems they will see for the rest of their lives.
It will help them to learn to communicate better with each other, and will help to better engage them in the math lessons.
