My students need 5 tablets. These tablets are necessary for my students to become fluent in technology and prepare for state tests that are administered via computer.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every morning we begin our day with a cheery greeting while I stand at the door. Once we are all inside I say "STOP" to which they reply, "collaborate and listen". This signifies that we are ready to learn and understand that we all contribute to our learning by working together.
We are an amazing melting pot of 46 students in a self-contained, ESE inclusion class.
Of my 46 brilliant little knowledge seekers, 9 are learning-disabled (or as I like to call them, my visually responsive learners). Ten are ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). We are quite a diverse group of students all working towards the common goal of knowledge. Like our classroom, our school is also diverse. We are a heavily populated Hispanic community. Parents and teachers work very closely to meet the many different needs of our students. Being that our community is predominantly Hispanic most of our parents do not speak English at all or very well. Therefore, students requiring further assistance from their parents may not always receive it. We are also a working-class area with many single parent homes. Most students do not have computers, lap tops, or Internet connectivity in their homes for financial reasons. Therefore, school is where our students have access to these materials.
My Project
Last year we embarked on a new adventure with a new Reading Series that was generously purchased by our District. Unfortunately, we were not given all the resources we need to be highly successful. Our students are sharing one book per every two students. In a class such as ours, where we have students with learning disabilities and attention deficit issues, sharing and trying to keep up with a partner is a huge task. On the bright side, our new series has everything we need ready and accessible online. Using tablets would allow my students to access a plethora of resources, as well as, help prepare them for our new state tests that will now be administered via computer. As you can imagine, giving these students the ability to use technology to access materials that they are required to use, but do not have, is huge. Students could use the tablets in teacher-led lessons, small groups, reinforce lessons, and play games that also reinforce what they have learned.
Taking an interest in our class project would have a huge impact on my students' education.
The proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child," comes to mind when I think of my students and their learning. It does take a village to help give children the materials that they need, to help them achieve educational success. Therefore, I am calling on all of you to dig into your pockets or your list of contacts to help fund and spread the word. We are going to help my future politicians and scientists!
