This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of 3rd-5th graders who range in abilities and come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. My classroom services students who are identified with high functioning autism, other health impaired, and students who are twice exceptional (autism and gifted). They are a loving and dynamic group of kids who have many interests and ways they like to learn. Students spend a majority of their time in my classroom working in small groups, rotating to different stations, either working with myself, support staff, or independently. Throughout the day we address grade level standards and IEP goals in a variety of ways that motivate and engage them. My students are a group of Minecraft, animal, and Sponge Bob loving kids who bring a smile to my face every day. They keep me on my toes and everyday I'm trying to learn how to communicate with them, pull them out of their bubbles and/or address their behavioral needs. I feel having more technology in the classroom will support this.
My Project
We need Chromebooks. My students need more access to what other students have and with only one desktop computer in the classroom this is currently not possible. I need 4 Chromebooks so my students can use them throughout the day as one of their stations. It's important for students to have access to technology as much as possible to prepare them to be college and career ready. The use of the Chromebooks will increase independence by encouraging self-directed learning, help differentiate instruction and personalize their learning, reduce anxiety, and improve academic skills.
Technology does more than make accommodations for my students, it will level the playing field.
Most of my students struggle with traditional writing on paper, worksheets, and in workbooks. These types of tasks tend to create anxiety and in turn produce a variety of behavioral outbursts. This causes the class and the student to lose much needed learning time. With our Chromebooks, students can receive the extra support that traditional methods cannot provide. Students will have access to text to speech for writing tasks which will help them better express their thoughts and ideas and really capture what they want to say. This will decrease writing meltdowns.
Some students in my class struggle with reading and some are English language learners. Technology in the class will allow students to have access to grade level stories so they can listen and follow along. With these 4 Chromebooks I could create a station for technology where they can do many things like review skills on Prodigy or Spellingcity. They can practice writing and use sites like Kidsblog. Students will be able to pursue their ideas. The possibilities are endless. Technology in my class will help inspire students, engage and motivate them, and enhance my daily lessons.
