I teach in an urban setting on the south side of Chicago. My students come to class each day ready to learn in an engaging and safe space. Each day, my students receive instruction in math and language arts in a variety of styles so each student's learning style is met.
With 30 students, it is often difficult to ensure that each student has supplies that allow and enhance learning.
My school is nestled in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. An area that once had a booming economy has fallen to poverty and acts of violence. Despite this, all of my students come to class each day with a smile on their face and are eager to take on the day together. They are not only an inspiration to each other, but to me!
My Project
Small group instruction is one way in which we try to fill the achievement gap that currently hinders students from accessing grade level content in Mathematics and Reading. One key part of small group instruction is student work on technology. There are several websites that students can enhance their mathematical skills, practices, and thinking including: Zearn, Moby Max and Khan Academy. For reading, students access programs such as Lexia and Raz Kids. These websites allow students to not only access grade-level material in Mathematics and Reading, but also allow students to access material in previous and upcoming grades to help fill gaps and enhance their learning. My students have benefited immensely from these sites in the past and have been able to boost their grades, test scores, and content learning.
Unfortunately, my school is unable to provide Chromebooks for each student, which lends to learning gaps and lack of progress.
If I were able to receive funding for these extra Chromebooks, it will ensure that my students have more opportunities to enhance their learning and be more successful in math and reading every single day.
