Technology to Empower Creativity, Communication, and Innovation for Future Leaders
Help me give my students littleBits STEAM+ Kits, Wonder Workshop Dash Coding Robots, and snap circuits technology to stimulate their creativity and encourage interest in the fields of technology and engineering.
In the eloquent words of Carl Rogers, “If we value independence… then we may wish to set up conditions of learning which make for uniqueness, for self-direction, and for self-initiated learning.” These words truly embody my own beliefs projects for gifted learners. The gifted learners I work with attend a high school that offers excellent acceleration for coursework; however, the demands of a rigorous schedule often overshadow enrichment. My students are involved in Honors/AP classes, but they need opportunities for choice and voice in their education. Therefore, I have developed enrichment opportunities for my students, such as book clubs, to meet their unique intellectual needs.
Given the unique nature of my gifted students, I would argue that there need to be differentiated educational programs and/or services beyond those usually provided by the regular school program.
My gifted learners need to have the ability to determine how personal thinking (interest, motivation, etc.) affects learning. In my role as a gifted teacher, I actively incorporate inquiry-based experiences to enhance student engagement. Through student engagement, I hope to honor the elusive nature of giftedness and the individuality of gifted learners. Please help my students explore beyond the confines of the classroom!
My Project
Bill Gates once said that technology supports communication, creativity, and a personalized learning experience (2004 speech at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign). Technology, if harnessed properly, can be one of the most empowering tools for student achievement and success. We are preparing students for future careers that do not yet exist. To help them be successful, we must cultivate problem-solving skills and an intrinsic love for learning.
Help me to actively incorporate more inquiry-based and technology-infused experiences to enhance engagement and ignite a passion for learning in my students.
I hope to do this by offering my students more opportunities for independent/individualized exploration and enrichment. These STEAM opportunities can help to support and facilitate problem-based learning. Problem-based (or inquiry-based) learning is essential for intrinsically motivating students to quest for knowledge. Our STEAM opportunities will also support students in the development of higher-order thinking skills and creativity.
My hope is that these enrichment opportunities will allow my students to play a more dynamic role in their learning experiences thus promoting the refinement of students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills.
