Our students need access to this level of technology because our demographics and socioeconomic diversity is changing. This area was formerly highly affluent but is now quite transient and this technology could light the fire for students to grasp pertinent concepts before they move away!
I have a very diverse group of students.
We are a Title One school that is currently feeding over 90% of the children on either free or reduced lunch. These children are from various countries of origin such as South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and home grown Americas. All of these students deserve the opportunity to interact with one of the newest and most sought after forms of technology. Some of these children do not have Internet access at home let alone desktops, laptops, or tablets. Just as we are seeking to feed these children nutritionally, we should also be seeking to feed them educationally. These iPads are my way of doing that!
My Project
These two iPads will be a resource to help our students compete globally. Considering that we are an International Baccalaureate Primary Years School, I would love to be able to further develop my students global mindedness by having them face-time with students in other countries to discuss global issues that impact us world-wide. Websites like Academic Skill Builders will also allow them to compete in real time with the student sitting right next to them as they hone their mathematical fluency. I have so many students that could benefit from this technology. I would LOVE to be able to begin using these tools as soon as possible.
School districts are really pushing for more inclusion, so the average classroom now has a wide-range of abilities from gifted and talented students, all the way to special education students that are learning how to interact in a general education classroom.
Technology is a way to bridge the gap with these children and is another way for me to ensure that they are internalizing the skills that they need to be successful this school year!
