it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help bring the computer age to my classroom. It's unbelievable that a classroom in 2016 only has two working computers, which are over 10 years old and falling apart. This is the challenge my students face every day. How can I prepare my students for the 21st century?
All my students are eligible for special education services.
The classroom has students with autism, specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, vision and hearing impairments. They attend a Title 1 school in California. My students come from a lower socioeconomic class and they have dreams of attending college. Many of them are English language learners and are several grade levels behind in reading and writing. Last year we advanced two of our students back to the general education curriculum. This year I hope it is three or more students. With the right amount of skills they can overcome their challenges and meet the expectations of the general education curriculum. Most of my students don't have Internet access at home or a working computer. However, they come every day eager to learn, grow and better their lives. Budget cuts have hit our school hard and the students have suffered the most. It is difficult to teach lessons in the computer age without computers.
My Project
Tablet computers have revolutionized classrooms across the country. These devices engage students commanding their attention like no other piece of technology I have ever seen. I don't know the reason for their obsessive interest, all I know is it can be used to keep them interested in learning. When an 11-year old kid doesn't even know how to turn on a computer or search the Internet for information, I feel we have failed them as a country. My students have already had two strikes against them. They come from disadvantaged homes and they have a disability. I'm desperately trying not have them leave school with the third strike of being technologically illiterate. On these Kindles, my students will learn how to access the internet to do research for projects. Math, language arts and science games will improve the skills closer to their non-disabled peers. I will buy educational apps that engage and excite with technology-rich lessons. Also, they will be used as a reward for positive behavior in class.
Do you remember what it was like when you first peered into a drop of pond water with a microscope and discovered a hidden world?
Do you remember when you first learned about the stars and the wondrous infinite universe? I do.
Science isn't an interest of mine, it is a passion. I love sharing my passion with my students. For many students science is the only subject that grabs your attention and keeps you coming back to school excited to learn. These kids need to know there are people who care.
