My Students

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." -Ignacio Estrada

My students are 6th graders attending a newly redistricted fifth and sixth grade school in Connecticut.

They come from all areas of town, mostly from an urban setting and many of them qualify for free/reduced lunch price. School offers the consistency and success that they so desire in their lives. Children learn by doing, but in a high poverty school, they often lack enriching experiences unless we provide them. Several of the students lack technology in their homes, so being able to access it at school will not only teach them to be better readers, but to LOVE to read and learn.

My Project

Bringing technology in our classroom would open up a world of opportunities for my students. iPads release teachers from being bound to chalk and dry-erase boards, and instead allow material to be presented in a free-flowing, dynamic manner. With the use of an iPad, I would be able to use videos, slides, and images to enhance my English Language Arts (ELA) lessons. Various learning styles can be addressed and accommodated by being able to manipulate, see, hear and touch. Using an iPad also promotes more teaching versatility. Rather than writing notes across a board or using a simple textbook, students will be engaged with content in interactive ways. Students will no longer be limited to a single picture to illustrate a text, but will have a plethora of photos with interactive captions. Even the reluctant reader, writer, and learner will feel elated with the use of an iPad. No longer will a question go unanswered because of a missing text book or a slow-to-boot computer.

By donating this technology to our classroom, the students will be more motivated and excited to learn.

With the touch of a finger, the myriad of resources would be invaluable! This would not only provide an iPad, but provide the students with the chance to learn and practice the skills they need to be successful 6th graders in the 21st century. The more opportunities my students have to interact with technology, the more prepared they will be for future careers and aspirations.
