My Students
I teach a K-2 bilingual class in an urban school with 85% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are brand new to the United States. My students enter my classroom with little or no English. Many of them have never had a school experience in their native country. It is my job to prepare them for the regular education classroom.
My students are currently from 4 different countries, speaking 3 different languages.
My students are all eager and excited to learn.
My Project
Teaching and learning from home will be a new experience for us. We muddled through the spring, but now it is time to get serious, especially with the possibility of teaching remote for the entire school year. My students deserve to have a learning environment as close to normal as possible. I am trying to set up my home to provide the students with the best learning environment possible. I will be getting them supplies for their home that will assist in their learning. But I need to set up my home teaching area to provide my students with the best access to their education as possible.
A second monitor and document camera will allow me to see my students and share the screen at the same time, which will help us feel a little bit closer.
The document camera will allow me to teach and have the students view what I am doing closely on their screens. For example, when using base ten blocks for counting, I would count with them on my table and the document camera would show the students what I was doing. If I were to just hold them in my hands up in the air, this would be very difficult for my students to see. With reading, instead of holding a book up in the air for the student to see, they will get a better view as I place the book on the table and point to each word as we read together. The extra monitor will allow me to see what I am doing on the document camera much easier, than on a tiny window on my laptop. I want to provide the best learning situation possible during this challenging time.
